The Faust Festival 2009 - 29th May to 20th June

The annual celebration of live theatre returns to Hong Kong for a triumphant 10th season! The Faust Festival 2009 is an opportunity for our young and talented actors to perform onstage and share their passion and excellence with the people of Hong Kong. The Faust Festival takes place at the McAulay Studio in the Hong Kong Arts Centre from 29th May to 20th June. Whether you're looking for classic children's stories faithfully told or innovative new shows for adults and family groups alike, The Faust Festival has something for everyone.

Faust International Youth Theatre was formed in 1999 to bring the exciting world of performing arts to the young people of Hong Kong. Each year we host The Faust Festival. Over the past ten years, this annual collection of productions by our young performers and theatre companies from Hong Kong and the rest of the world has drawn increasing audiences and nurtured many talented writers, actors and directors who have gone on to produce further work in Hong Kong and around the region.

The Secret Garden and Peter & the Wolf

Faust's Theatre in Education (TIE) programme premieres at this year's Faust Festival and is set to become a regular provider of quality, educational and entertaining performances for children. Faust's TIE performances are designed to bring the written word to life on stage. Nothing can match the magic of live performance and we hope you will enjoy these outstanding tales while using them as a springboard to inspire debate and form the basis of educational material.

The Secret Garden
Join us for this inspirational theatrical adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic novel, beloved by readers around the world for nearly a hundred years. The Secret Garden is performed by an adult cast and is ideally suitable for those aged 7 and above.

Peter & the Wolf
This superb dramatisation of Peter & the Wolf, accompanied by movement, dialogue and Sergey Prokofiev's musical score, provides an enthralling performance for young people. Peter & the Wolf is performed by an adult cast and is ideally suitable for those aged 3 and above.

Staging Children's Classics

Faust is renowned not only for staging successful adaptations of existing classics but also taking them into completely new and exciting directions. This Faust Festival is no exception as we present a series of pieces that will create a unique perspective on familiar characters and scenarios.

The joyous and heartwarming tale of The Wind in the Willows comes alive in a fantastic new adaptation. The directors and young performers will portray the colourful characters and their madcap adventures with a fresh and vivid approach that will excite family audiences.

We will also be staging an adaptation of Mark Twain's classic character, Tom Sawyer. An irrepressible and mischievous young spirit, the adventures of Tom Sawyer will be a delight for children of all ages.

For older family audiences, we will be presenting one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies: Macbeth. Radically reinterpreted by the young teenage members of Group E, we will see how the ambitious and ruthless soldier Macbeth can be understood in today's modern world.

There are many more exciting, classic tales retold in The Faust Festival such as Stone Soup, Treasure Island, Anansi and The Pied Piper of Hamlin.

Innovative New Tales

Along with the stage adaptations of classic stories we have several exciting new tales!

Jack and Jill's Fabulous Fairytale Film Noir Adventures is an original play that features fairytale characters in an all new light! Who vandalised the Three Bears’ home? Who pushed Humpty Dumpty off the wall? Jack and Jill are on the case as they investigate the shady characters of Fable City.

The Golden Age of Comedy is a tribute to stars of a bygone era such as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy, The Marx Brothers and many more. Featuring original skits inspired by these classic comedians, the young actors will aim to bring down the house with laughter and fun.

Other new stories include C.S. Lewis, This Is Your Life, Follow the Animal Tale, Mother Goose is on the Loose, and The Muskadets!

And Many More!

In addition to the highlights mentioned above we have many more to offer with over 20 new productions providing a dramatic feast for all the family.
