Dear Parents,

Welcome to a very busy time of the year at Faust! Our many groups and staff are gearing up for this year's Faust Festival (you can see more on this below) and it won't be long before we're drawing the term to a close and moving on to our Summer Programmes. Current parents will also be receiving details of our new 2010 - 2011 Season next week. Please do note that there is a special application period for those who are already enrolled before we open places up to those on waiting lists and the general public.

I'm looking forward to seeing the performances at the Festival later this month and through June. Don't leave it too late to book tickets though as some of these performances will sell out well before the curtain goes up. And if you have time, try to catch some of the other performances taking place - perhaps something by children of a similar age to your own or one of our Theatre in Education performances such as Oliver Twist or Peter & the Wolf. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our young performers the very best with their shows. Break a leg!

Best Wishes

Matthew Gregory

The Faust  Festival 2010 Preview
The Faust Festival is nearly here! In just 2 weeks we will be starting our annual Festival full of theatre performances by our young members as well as seasoned professionals at the Hong Kong Arts Centre.

From May 25th to June 20th, almost everyday will be jam packed full of fun and exciting theatrical shows for the whole family to enjoy. Every Faust group will perform their show at the McAulay Studio under the stage lights and share with the audience the talent, commitment and excitement of acting live on stage.

We have a wide range of adaptations and original stories this year. Well known and popular stories such as Robin Hood, Journey to the West, The Ugly Duckling, The Jungle Book, Aladdin and others will be brought to life by our young members. New and original stories for the Faust Festival this year include Kip Marlowe and the Heart of Diamonds, The Baker Street Irregulars, Backstage and many more. These wide range of stories incorporate colourful characters with great plots and themes that the whole family can enjoy.

The teenage groups of Faust have also taken a more proactive role in their development of their plays. They have taken their skills and knowledge learnt in terms 1 and 2 and are devising their material in plays as diverse as A Wind for Troy and The Comic Conundrums of Commedia dell'Arte. This is a big challenge for our teen members and we look forward to sharing their creative output onstage.

In addition to our shows performed by our young members, we also have our Theatre in Education shows with adult cast members. In addition to last year's exciting shows Peter and the Wolf and The Secret Garden, we have two new shows: Oliver Twist and Splat!

Oliver Twist is an adaptation of Charles Dickens' captivating story about an orphan boy who seeks his fortune on the streets of London. It is a production that is sure to inspire children with its lively approach.

Splat! is a poetry based show that introduces new poems and some old ones too, exploring an exciting mix of poetic styles with a dramatic twist. Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to share with your children an engaging and delightful world of poetry.

There is a lot to look forward to at the Faust Festival 2010 and something for everyone in the family! We look forward to welcoming you at the Hong Kong Arts Centre on May 25th!

 Oliver Twist - A Review
TIEFaust's Theatre in Education version of this Charles Dickens classic launched in early 2010 and has since toured several schools, performing for audiences ranging from ages 8 to 15. Featuring just four actors playing multiple roles,TIE the show gives students a behind-the-scenes style look at how great literature can be translated from the page to the stage. Tammi Williams, a member of the Canadian International School Parents' Association, had this to say; "What a blast! I loved the show, I loved the actors and the students were completely charmed. We are very excited to work with your team on future productions."

Oliver Twist will be performed during the Faust Festival 2010, both in the McAulay Studio and at a limited number of schools. For more information & ticket availability, call Aarti on 2547 9114

 Drama Game of the Month
World's Greatest Sandwich
Players sit in a circle. One person begins by saying his/her name and then states what ingredient goes on the sandwich.

Example: "My name is Charlotte, and the World's Greatest Sandwich has pickles." The next person in the circle announces their name and says Kevin's ingredient as well as her own. "Hi, my name is Sarah, and the World's Greatest Sandwich has pickles and popcorn." This activity helps the students build memorization skills. And at the finally, have the kids mime taking a bite.
