Faust International Youth Theatre Newsletter
HomeVol. 2 No. 7 December 3rd 2009

Dear Parents

We would like to wish you and your family Merry Christmas and hope you have a fantastic festive season and a wonderful new year. In the Faust office the arrival of Christmas also signifies one year of having our very own studio! What better way to celebrate both Christmas and our very own space than with our annual Festive Fundraiser on December 5th. As part of our commitment to the community, we are organising an afternoon of festive frolics and games. We are raising money this year for Mother's Choice, a fantastic Hong Kong charity that helps children. It would be lovely to see you all at this event. More information is below.

Our FIYT term one is also drawing to a close this week and we are looking forward to seeing you in term two. Please remember, many of our groups have waiting lists and we will shortly be opening the groups to new members. So if you have not let us know your plans for next term please contact Tess immediately.

In this newsletter we visit our older Stage group and learn about their exciting workshop with Theatre of the Silence. Finally a reminder that, tickets go on sale through Urbtix for Alice in Wonderland on the 10th December. We already have one sold out show so if you have not got your ticket yet please do.

 Faust Festive Fundraiser 2009
Come join us this Christmas for an afternoon of themed theatrical fun!Fundraiser logo Everyone is welcome to join our festive games where we will attempt to reduce the complete works of Grimm's Fairytales into a one-minute performance and challenge ourselves to make a tuneful Christmas medley of carols by humming only! So if you are ready to get into the festive spirit by twisting your body into the shape of a mince pie or modelling your friends into the various parts of a snowman, come along and join our fun!

Participants are asked to give a small donation of HK$100 to attend this event. All proceeds will be donated to Mother's Choice who are raising funds this winter for medical care to keep their babies healthy through the challenging flu season. Mother's Choice is a Hong Kong-based non-profit organisation which concerns itself with the plight of Hong Kong's single teenagers and their family members coping with crisis pregnancies.

Theatre of the Silence
This term Stage Group (ages 15 - 18) has been looking at the world ofTOS1 mime and physical theatre. This has included, amongst other things, a study of Marcel Marceau's Bip the Birdkeeper and The Lion Tamer, Cirque du Soleil's Storm, Pilobilus Shadow Theatre, Jerome Murat's mime and illusion, Rowan Atkinson's Invisible Drum Kit and Pink Tights and Plenty of Props.

On November 19th we had a special workshop as part of our study ofTOS2 mime, held by Theatre of the Silence (TOS) at the Faust Studio. One of the company's deaf performers, assisted by an interpreter, led the group on a voyage of mime discovery helping us understand how more complicated performances start with the simplest of signs or movements. Edwin, one of the founders of TOS, who has performed with the company all over the world, provided an inspirational workshop which will be remembered by participants for years to come. In just a short period of time it was clear to see that Stage Group's confidence levels in this specific theatrical genre had come on leaps and bounds and by the end of the evening we were enacting complex scenes with great clarity for our audience.

Drama Game of the Month
The Last Mince Pie on Earth
This game involves asking the group to get into a circle, preferably seated. In the centre, put down a Mince Pie. The group have to go round in a circle explaining why they need the mince pie. Encourage the group to get more ridiculous and more entertaining!
