Was the initial cry when we introduced our
new one-day stand alone workshop. With enthusiasm,
talent and dedication anything is possible was our
reply. So why do everything in just one
day?
The overriding aim of the day is for
the kids to have fun and enjoy themselves. Play in
a Day also provides children with an insight into
the different steps in the production process,
from initial read through, to characterisation
(how to develop the character on stage), blocking
(where everyone needs to be on stage), line
learning (or improvisation when needed), dress
rehersals and of course the final performance. It
also introduces, within a supportive and enjoyable
environment, the concept of working under pressure
and the strengths and benefits of effective
teamwork. Children who start the day knowing
no-one, leave knowing everyone!
The choice
of play is also important - it needs to have many
roles, allowing everyone to shine and participate,
a play also that inspires and interests the
participants. And for our half-term Play in a Day
we have returned to an old favourite, Roald Dahl
but with a new play -
Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory. It will not, of
course, be possible to perform the whole play in
just 30 minutes but our Play in the Day Directors'
Keon Lee and Jessica McClellan are presently
working with the script to abridge and reduce. You
never know we may even get the reduced works of
Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory! For more information about
