HomeVol. 2 No. 10, March 2nd 2010

Dear Parents,

It looks like Winter may be behind us and as we move into Spring we have lots of new things to look forward to. Our older Stage Group are putting on a performance of The Crucible (17th - 20th March). The show is looking fantastic and I recommend you buy tickets soon as they are going fast! We also have a new term to look forward to, as well as the annual Faust Festival. This year it will be held from 25th May - 20th June at the McAulay Studio (Hong Kong Arts Centre, Wan Chai). This is a fantastic opportunity for our young Faustians to perform on stage. All children registered in Term 3 will be part of the Festival and will be key members in this theatrical extravaganza!

I hope you enjoy this month's newsletter which looks at The Crucible, Theatre in Education and Faust's school programmes and as always, if you have any feedback please don't hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards

Claire Glover
General Manager

The Crucible
The CrucibleIn just two weeks' time our group of older Faustians take to the stage at the McAulay Studio with Arthur Miller's incredible drama, The Crucible. First performed in 1953 at the height of Senator McCarthy's campaign against communists and their associates, The Crucible draws a clear analogy with the witch hunts of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 - the subject of the play. This production is recommended for those aged ten and over and runs for just four days from March 17th - 20th. Stage Group is comprised of 15 - 18 year olds, many of whom have been with Faust since they were much younger. They've had some chances to tread the boards, but this presents the most challenging opportunity yet! After a prank by a group of teenage girls goes wrong, the entire village is soon consumed by hysteria, leading to innocent victims being put on trial and the story's devastating conclusion. Stage Group has been working hard since before Christmas and now as the performance dates approach, excitement is mounting!

Tickets are available from URBTIX outlets, or you can call 2111 5999 or visit www.urbtix.hk. Join us as this incredible story unfolds in a dramatic and moving portrayal of Arthur Miller's celebrated script.

 Theatre in Education
TIE LogoMarch is an exciting month for Faust's TIE programme as we tour some new schools and return to others with new productions! Our talented actors bring classic stories to life on stage in a fun, interactive style that helps students learn while being thoroughly entertained. The three productions currently on offer are Peter & the Wolf, The Secret Garden, and Oliver Twist. All three work in a variety of spaces so if you have a school hall or other large venue, we can bring a performance to you! Next in the pipeline for TIE will be theatre-based and school-based shows, as well as the launch of a brand new production, at this year's Faust Festival. For more information, call 2547 9114 or email TIE@FaustWorld.com.

Faust School Programmes: HKUGA Primary School
For the past few months Faust workshop leaders have been teaching drama at Hong Kong University Graduates Association Primary School in Chai Wan. These energetic local students made a strong start to their drama education as they were full of energy and humour. Leaders Kate Sullivan and Keon Lee have been introducing theatre knowledge and drama conventions and have been impressed by the quick thinking and progress of the HKUGA students. Still pictures, soundscapes, mime and storytelling were just a few of the things covered.

All of this will lead to a performance as part of a larger school festival. With just a few short weeks to go, the students have been madly rehearsing and devising original drama pieces with the theme of 'Hong Kong style fairy tales'. There were lots of fun and wacky ideas coming through and we look forward to entertaining performances crafted for their fellow students.
